Students Expose Housing Exploitation by Trainers at Kenya School of TVET

The Kenya School of TVET, formerly known as the Kenya Technical Training College, has been drawn into scrutiny following complaints from students, trainers, and stakeholders regarding the institution’s training quality, program implementation, and administrative challenges.

Having undergone rebranding under Legal Order 123 of 2022 and Presidential Order 1 of 2022, the institution has sought to modernize TVET training by expanding its mandate to include competency-based education and training (CBET), recognition of prior learning interventions, and new courses tailored to emerging technologies.

However, concerns have emerged over the institution’s ability to uphold its intended objectives, with allegations surfacing about unethical conduct among some of its staff.

Reports indicate that certain civil servants attached to the institution have been misusing accommodation facilities meant for them, allegedly turning these spaces into a private business by renting them out to students instead of focusing on their teaching duties.

Sources claim that these trainers, who are housed within the institution at no cost, have been charging students Ksh. 12,000 per person for lodging, with up to 10 trainees reportedly being accommodated in a single room.

This alleged practice has raised ethical concerns, as it not only imposes a financial burden on students but also suggests a shift in priorities, with trainers engaging in commercial activities rather than delivering quality instruction.

The claims have sparked debate over the level of oversight exercised by the school’s administration.

Beyond financial exploitation, the issue also affects the institution’s academic integrity, as students relying on these trainers for instruction may be receiving a substandard learning experience.

The situation has drawn concern from stakeholders who believe that such misconduct undermines efforts to enhance the quality and credibility of technical and vocational education in the country.

Given the gravity of these allegations, there are growing calls for a thorough investigation by the Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) administration, the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Stakeholders argue that failure to address these claims could erode confidence in the institution and derail its mission to enhance technical and vocational education.

KSTVET, MoE, EACC, and DCI are now under pressure to act decisively and restore accountability.

“Hello, Cyprian Nyakundi. Kindly hide my identity.

Some civil servants at the Kenya School of TVET are allegedly renting out rooms provided to them for free by the institution instead of fulfilling their teaching duties.

They charge Ksh 12,000 per trainee and accommodate up to 10 students per room, turning the institution into a business venture rather than a centre for learning.

This unethical practice not only exploits students but also compromises the quality of education, as these individuals are no longer actively teaching.

Such misconduct must be exposed to ensure accountability and restore the institution’s integrity.

Authorities, including the school administration, the Ministry of Education (MoE), and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), should investigate and take immediate action.

The media, social platforms, and student representatives can also play a role in bringing attention to this issue.

Urgent measures are needed to stop this malpractice and uphold the institution’s educational mandate.”
