William Ruto has rewarded Kenyan marathon star Sabastian Sawe with Ksh8 million and a brand new vehicle after his record-breaking performance at the London Marathon.

Sawe stunned the world after clocking 1:59:30, becoming the first man to officially run a marathon in under two hours and breaking the previous mark set by the late Kelvin Kiptum.

At State House Nairobi, Ruto presented Sawe with cheques worth Ksh5 million for setting a world record and Ksh3 million for winning gold under the government’s sports rewards programme.

The President also handed Sawe a customised number plate marked “1:59:30” and directed him to choose any vehicle, fully funded by the state.

During the ceremony, Sawe gifted Ruto an autographed pair of shoes he wore during the historic race.

Ruto hailed the athlete for redefining human limits and inspiring Kenya and the world.

The same race also saw Yofin Kejelcha run 1:59:41, while Jacob Kiplimo finished third in 2:00:28.
