Story · Slavery In Kenya: Merryland Kindergarten And School On The Spot

On its Facebook page, Merryland School boasts of being a Christian based learning center that focuses on holistic development and growth of a child. The school offers pre-school and primary.

Religion provides comfort, but it has also been used to enslave. Kenyans need to wake up an dream bigger than religion as it is one of the avenues that thieves, murderers, rapists and crooks are hiding while continuing to perpetrate untold suffering on millions of Kenyans.

Hi Cyprian,

There's is a school by the name Merryland Kindergarten and School in Katani, Machakos County.

A friend of mine works there and has confided in me some issues that border slavery, oppression and mistreatment that they are subjected to by the management. These are serious allegations that require further investigations as they touch on infringement of rights of employees as per the Kenya labour laws. Most teachers do not have employment contract and thus are treated as casual labourers. Teachers are paid as low as Ksh.8,000 per month which is below the minimum wage for this profession. Teachers are not paid during school holidays. That means in the months of April, August, November and December teachers go without salary. Firing without cause is the norm. She cited a case in which a teacher was fired this month for requesting if the management can consider paying them for November salary. Teachers are overworked - in addition to spending the whole day in class teaching, a teacher is expected to accompany the driver when taking pupils back to their homes in the evening. Teachers work for more than 8 hours a day with no overtime pay. Let's document by highlighting more cases of Slavery in Kenya. Send information to hello@nyakundireport.com
