Kenyans in the legal community are celebrating a major milestone after NIS Director General Noordin Haji and several top lawyers were approved for conferment of the prestigious Senior Counsel rank. The recognition, considered the highest honour in the legal profession, crowns decades of excellence for those selected.
This year’s announcement generated intense interest after the Law Society of Kenya opened applications earlier in September. The rise of Senior Counsel Noordin Haji underscores a career marked by public service, reform efforts, and a strong footprint in national security and justice.

How Noordin Haji Earned the Prestigious Senior Counsel Rank
The Law Society of Kenya kick-started the 2025 process on September 2, inviting qualified advocates to submit their applications for consideration. The invitation, issued by LSK President Faith Odhiambo and CEO Florence Muturi, signalled another competitive cycle in a profession where the Senior Counsel title represents the peak of legal achievement.
LSK Opens Competitive Cycle for Advocates
In its notice, the Society emphasized adherence to Rule 5 of the Advocates Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges Rules, 2011. The Committee on Senior Counsel began receiving applications from lawyers with the required qualifications. The call immediately generated momentum, particularly among seasoned legal minds seeking recognition for years of service.
The Committee includes representatives from leading legal bodies and carries the responsibility of evaluating applications before making official recommendations to President William Ruto.
Committee Reviews Applicants Before Confirming Senior Counsel Status
By December 3, the Committee had considered all applications under Rules 7 and 10 of the 2011 regulations, revised in 2017. After rigorous vetting, the panel recommended several distinguished lawyers for the honour.
Among them is NIS Director General Noordin Haji, whose selection stands out due to his long record in public prosecution, national intelligence leadership, and contributions to law enforcement reforms. His conferment adds a new layer to an already influential career.
Noordin Haji Joins Kenya’s Most Respected Legal Ranks
The list forwarded to President Ruto features some of the most respected legal minds in Kenya. The recognition cements their place among the country’s elite advocates. For NIS DG Noordin Haji, the honour reinforces his role in shaping Kenya’s legal and security frameworks.
