Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has announced her intention to contest the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election, signalling her ambition to take over the position currently held by Edwin Sifuna, who is reportedly considering a higher political office.

Speaking during the commemoration of Raila Odinga's first death anniversary in Bondo, Siaya County, Winnie suggested that Sifuna's political ambitions could create an opportunity for her to enter the Nairobi senatorial race. She made the announcement while addressing mourners and political leaders who had gathered to remember her father.

"As Edwin Sifuna searches for a higher office, I see kuna nafasi hapo Nairobi, and that's why I've decided I'll stand for the Senate seat in Nairobi County," Winnie declared.

Her announcement introduces an interesting development within ODM, where Sifuna has established himself as one of the party's most prominent politicians. As Nairobi Senator, Sifuna has maintained a strong national profile through his political engagements and outspoken positions on governance, making his next political move a matter of interest ahead of the 2027 elections.

Winnie's decision also raises questions about the political direction she intends to take following her father's death. Although she has previously been involved in political activities associated with Raila and ODM, her announcement signals an intention to pursue an elective position in Nairobi, where she would have to build her own campaign and seek support from voters across the county.

The timing is particularly significant because her declaration comes during the first anniversary of Raila's death, an occasion that has brought together members of the Odinga family, ODM officials and supporters from different parts of the country. The gathering has also provided an opportunity for political figures associated with the former Prime Minister to discuss his legacy and the future of the movement he helped build.

For ODM, the prospect of Winnie seeking the Nairobi Senate seat could become part of wider discussions about the party's candidates and leadership ahead of 2027. However, her declaration does not mean Sifuna has formally vacated the seat or that the party has settled on its candidate. Any nomination would still depend on the applicable party procedures and electoral requirements.

Winnie has not yet outlined a detailed campaign programme for Nairobi or explained whether she intends to seek the ODM nomination. Her remarks nevertheless place her among the politicians expressing interest in the capital's Senate seat ahead of the next general election.

With Sifuna's political plans still to be formally settled, attention will now turn to whether he pursues another office and how Winnie intends to position herself in a race that could become one of Nairobi's closely watched political contests in 2027.
