Artcaffè Employee Raises Questions Over KSh11,000 Deduction After Contract Ends

A former Artcaffè Coffee & Bakery employee has raised concerns over KSh11,000 deduction from his final dues after his one year employment contract came to an end in September 2026.

The employee, whose name and staff identification details we have withheld, had worked for the company under a one year contract that commenced on September 12, 2025, and was scheduled to end on September 11, 2026.

Documents shared with us show that Artcaffè’s Human Resources department wrote to the employee on August 13, 2026, informing him that his contract would not be renewed when it expired the following month.

The communication stated that he had been issued with thirty days’ notice effective August 13, 2026, and that his final working day with the company would be September 11, 2026.

According to the employee’s family, however, his supervisor later informed him that following the termination of his contract, he was no longer required to report to work.

The family says the employee subsequently cleared with the branch and was instructed to return for payment of his outstanding dues, including salary for the period he had already worked.

When he returned to collect the money, the family says that he was informed that approximately KSh11,000 would be deducted from his salary because he had not issued notice before leaving the company.

A payslip provided alongside the complaint shows a basic salary of KSh20,800, with gross pay recorded at KSh11,280.60 and net pay of KSh10,158 after deductions for the period reflected on the document.

The family disputes the reported notice deduction, maintaining that the employee did not resign from his position and that the communication ending the employment relationship originated from the company.

They further maintain that the employee stopped reporting to work after receiving instructions from his supervisor and subsequently completed the clearance process as directed.

The documents provided show that Artcaffè’s August 13 communication described the matter as a decision not to renew the employee’s one year contract and stated that his final dues would be computed and processed after the contract ended.

The circumstances surrounding the KSh11,000 deduction, including the contractual provision under which it was calculated and the employee’s instructions following the August notice, remain the subject of the complaint raised by the family.
