Tanzania’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at a hospital in Zanzibar.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced Hassan’s death on Monday, September 7, 2026, saying he died at around 8am while receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.
According to Ndejembi, Hassan had been admitted after developing heart-related complications. The Vice President conveyed condolences to President Samia, Hassan’s family, relatives, friends and Tanzanians following the death.
“Fellow citizens, it is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President,” Ndejembi said in announcing the news.
He added that funeral arrangements had begun in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, as the country mourns the First Gentleman.
Further details on the funeral programme and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
