The Ministry of Health is seeking about Sh3 billion to prepare for possible El Niño-related disease outbreaks and health emergencies. Officials are warning of increased risk of cholera, malaria, typhoid, diarrhoeal illnesses and other diseases associated with heavy rainfall and flooding. The money would be used for surveillance, emergency response, health-worker preparedness, medicines, supplies and disease-control measures.
