Fresh allegations have emerged against a senior official in the Ministry of Education, with a whistleblower claiming that the management of school co curricular activities has been undermined by corruption, favouritism and abuse of office.

According to the complainant, the concerns centre on Nelson Sifuna, the Director of Field Coordination and Co Curricular Activities, who oversees school co curricular programmes, including activities under the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA).

The whistleblower claims Director Field coordination and Co-curricular activities at the Ministry of Education Nelson Sifuna has allegedly used his position to influence appointments, promotions and decisions affecting school competitions across the country.

According to the complainant, organisers of school co curricular events are pressured to part with money during competitions and official activities.

The whistleblower further alleges that promotions and appointments of some education officers and officials in charge of various co curricular disciplines are influenced by personal relationships and loyalty rather than merit and qualifications.

The complainant says this has weakened the quality and credibility of school activities.

The whistleblower also raises concerns about the handling of disputes during KSSSA competitions.

According to the complaint, some teachers and officials believe that decisions reached by competition juries can be overturned after intervention from senior offices.

The complainant claims this has eroded confidence in the independence of disciplinary and appeals processes within school sports.

Another allegation is that certain principals are protected from disciplinary action, including cases involving player eligibility and age verification, because of their relationship with senior officials.

The complainant further alleges that teachers and coaches who question decisions or speak out against perceived irregularities risk being sidelined from officiating, coaching or participating in national events.

According to the whistleblower, some deserving schools and players are allegedly disadvantaged while institutions perceived to enjoy protection from Director Field coordination and Co-curricular activities at the Ministry of Education, Nelson Sifuna, receive favourable treatment.

The complainant also claims jury panels in some regions are influenced through the appointment of officials perceived to be loyal to senior leadership, raising concerns about the independence of competition outcomes.

The whistleblower argues that inconsistent enforcement of player eligibility rules has created a perception that some schools are punished for minor infractions while others escape sanctions for more serious violations.

According to the complainant, these concerns have contributed to declining confidence among teachers, coaches and students in the fairness of school competitions.

If established, the allegations would raise serious questions about governance, transparency and accountability in the management of co curricular activities within Kenya's education system.

The concerns now place responsibility on the Ministry of Education, led by Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, together with Principal Secretary for Basic Education Prof. Julius Bitok, to respond to the issues raised and clarify the safeguards in place to protect the integrity of school competitions.

The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the leadership of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association may also be expected to review any credible evidence if formal complaints are lodged.

There's this Director Field coordination and Co-curricular activities at the Ministry of Education Jogoo House. This guy is so corrupt and immoral. Being in charge of Co-curricular activities, he moves around collecting money from all the organizers of the activities, he also ensured that he appoints and promotes his side chicks and sycophants as Education officers and in-charge of the various disciplines at the expense of competency and qualifications.

We believe corruption, favouritism and sexual interference are affecting appointments, promotions and decisions within school sports.

Many teachers and coaches have lost confidence in the fairness of KSSSA competitions and fear speaking out because they believe they may be victimised or excluded from future activities.

We are asking the Ministry of Education and relevant investigative agencies to independently examine these concerns and restore confidence in the management of school co-curricular activities.
