[ad_1] Narok Stadium will now be known as Ole Ntimama Stadium. This is after the government agreed with the request of Maasai leaders to rename the facility after the late Maasai politician. In an interview with Mchipuko News at the stadium, Sports Minister Amina Mohammed, in a message conveyed on her behalf by Minister of Environment Keriako Tobiko said that the government has agreed with the proposal of the Maasai leaders to rename the facility after the late firebrand politician.
Amina added that the late had been a strong defender of the Maasai rights and traditions hence the need to honour him by renaming the facility after him.
“The request by the Maa Community to have the Narok Stadium’s name changed from Narok Stadium to Ole Ntimama Stadium in honour of the community hero, William Ole Ntimama has been accepted by the government,”Amina said in a speech read on her behalf during a prayes meeting at the Stadium over the weekend.
“The Stadium shall be uplifted to international standards by March 2020,”she added . Apart from changing the stadium’s name, the government also promised to renovate and upgrade the facility to reach world class standards by the end of 2022.
ODM party leader Raila Odinga kicked off the calls to rename the facility after Ole Ntimama during the burial of former Transport Licensing Board chairman Hassan Ole Kamwaro on September 28, 2019, challenging the Narok County Assembly to pass a bill to that effect.
“Sometimes I get amazed, this is a very small issue and I asked the Narok County Assembly of Narok to legislate the move in one week’s time,” Raila said back then.
Ntimama died on September 1, 2016. [ad_2] Source link
