Nairobi MCAs Move to Impeach Governor Sakaja citing Incompetence and Arrogance

A fresh political storm is brewing in the city after Nairobi MCAs resolved to begin the Governor Sakaja impeachment Nairobi process.

The ward leaders accuse Johnson Sakaja of incompetence and ignoring development projects in their wards.

Why MCAs Want Sakaja Out

The resolution followed a Speaker’s Kamkunji chaired by Speaker Ken Ngondi.

During the meeting, MCAs openly criticized Sakaja, saying he had failed to deliver on key promises.

Over 96 members have already declared support for the motion.

Next Tuesday, the leaders will meet in Naivasha for a retreat to start collecting the signatures required for impeachment.

South B MCA Chege Waithera confirmed that the decision was unanimous.

She said both UDA and ODM members had agreed to work together, showing rare unity in the county assembly.

Accusations Against Sakaja

Waithera argued that Sakaja had lost touch with ordinary Nairobians.

She pointed to many stalled projects that had left residents frustrated and questioning the county’s priorities.

“There are so many projects that have stalled. Residents keep asking why they have not been completed,” she said.

MCAs also claimed the governor enjoys support from less than a quarter of the assembly, leaving him politically weak.

MCAs Ready to Collect Signatures

Waithera said the process will strictly follow the law. She added that the numbers already favor the impeachment motion.

“Signature collection will start very soon. We had 96 members attend the Kamkunji, which is well above the required threshold,” she explained.

Other MCAs backed her, promising to move forward without hesitation.

They even said they are ready to convene a special sitting if needed.

Leaders Criticize Sakaja’s Leadership

Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi said members would not risk their political futures just to protect the governor.

Nairobi CBD MCA Mwaniki Kwenya also accused Sakaja of undermining elected leaders. He claimed the governor had been working with their political opponents ahead of the 2027 elections.

“How can the governor work with our rivals when he should be coordinating development with us?” Kwenya asked.

Past Attempts and Political Fallout

This is not the first attempt to impeach Sakaja.

An earlier effort led by former Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve stalled before his death in April.

Two separate petitions filed by Nairobi residents were also dismissed by the Speaker.

However, this time the political environment appears to be different.

The governor is said to have lost the backing of ODM leader Raila Odinga and several senior Kenya Kwanza figures.

With his political base shrinking, Sakaja now faces the toughest fight of his career.
