Nairobi Hospital Wrangles Deepen As Advisory Committee Disowns Doctors Who Sought Ruto’s Intervention

The Nairobi Hospital wrangles have taken a dramatic turn after senior doctors distanced themselves from colleagues who sought President William Ruto’s intervention.

The Medical Advisory Committee now accuses the group of bypassing internal systems and spreading misleading claims that have inflamed an already volatile crisis.

As arrests, governance disputes, and financial allegations pile up, fresh questions are emerging about who controls one of Kenya’s most prestigious private hospitals—and whether patient care is at risk.

The Nairobi Hospital wrangles now demand urgent accountability, transparent leadership, and unity among doctors, because prolonged infighting risks eroding public trust and undermining patient care at a critical time.

Nairobi Hospital Wrangles Expose Deep Governance Cracks

The Nairobi Hospital wrangles are no longer a quiet internal dispute. They have evolved into a full-blown governance crisis, pitting sections of doctors, management, and board members against each other.

At the center of the latest fallout is the Medical Advisory Committee, a powerful body representing about 730 consultants. The committee has openly disowned five doctors who recently sought intervention from the President, arguing that their actions violated established communication protocols and misrepresented the hospital’s situation.

Committee chairperson Dr Agnes Gachoki did not mince her words. She insisted that the hospital operates through a structured governance system designed to handle disputes internally before escalating them to higher authorities.

She explained that each medical division holds regular meetings to discuss concerns affecting patient care and operations. These issues are then forwarded to the advisory committee for coordinated deliberation and resolution.

According to her, this structure ensures accountability, consistency, and professional integrity in decision-making. Any attempt to bypass it, she argued, undermines the institution’s governance framework.

Doctors accused of bypassing internal systems

The committee has taken particular issue with the five doctors who directly approached the President. Despite being members of the advisory structure, they allegedly ignored internal channels and chose external escalation.

Dr Gachoki stated that proper communication must flow through the hospital’s board before reaching external stakeholders. By skipping this process, the doctors not only broke protocol but also risked damaging the hospital’s credibility.

She further accused them of presenting misleading information to the presidency and the public. This, she warned, has fueled confusion among patients and stakeholders while escalating tensions within the hospital.

The committee’s position is clear. It views the move as a breach of professional conduct and a direct challenge to institutional order.

Ruto’s intervention raises stakes in hospital crisis

The involvement of President William Ruto has significantly raised the stakes in the Nairobi Hospital wrangles.

The State House confirmed that the president had been briefed on the crisis and had called for transparency in addressing governance and financial concerns. His intervention followed a wave of complaints from doctors, patients, and members of the Kenya Hospital Association.

These complaints painted a troubling picture. Stakeholders raised concerns about leadership disputes, financial opacity, and operational instability—issues that could potentially affect patient care and long-term sustainability.

The decision to involve the presidency signals how far the crisis has escalated. What began as internal disagreements has now drawn national attention, placing the hospital under intense public and political scrutiny.

Arrests and financial allegations intensify scrutiny

The crisis deepened further after the arrest of several senior board members on March 14. Those detained included chairman Dr Job Obwaka, vice chairman Samson Kinyanjui, former chairman Dr Chris Bichange, and director Valery Gaya.

Authorities accused them of serious offences, including conflict of interest, withholding financial records for years, and receiving unlawful benefits linked to an insurance agency contracted by the hospital.

Although the four were later released on a bond of Ksh5 million each, the arrests have amplified concerns about governance failures and financial mismanagement within the institution.

These developments have also reinforced calls for accountability and transparency. Stakeholders now want clear answers on how the hospital has been managed and whether internal controls have failed.

Hospital insists services remain stable

Despite the turmoil, the Medical Advisory Committee maintains that the hospital continues to operate effectively. Dr Gachoki reassured the public that about 80 percent of services remain available.

She emphasized that doctors are still attending to patients and that the facility has not experienced a total breakdown in operations. However, the reassurance comes against a backdrop of growing uncertainty. Governance disputes, public accusations, and legal battles have already dented confidence in the hospital’s leadership.

The committee now faces a difficult task. It must restore trust, enforce internal discipline, and ensure that patient care does not suffer as the Nairobi Hospital wrangles continue to unfold.

The unfolding crisis exposes more than just internal disagreements. It reveals systemic weaknesses in governance, communication, and accountability. Unless stakeholders confront these issues head-on, the wrangles risk evolving into a deeper institutional failure with far-reaching consequences for Kenya’s healthcare sector.
