Administration Block Kabarak University

Cyprian Nyakundi has received reports that Kabarak University has illegally raised their school fees thereby locking out many students.

“Kabarak University is overcharging students' school fees. One has to pay Sh10,000 to retake a single unit. Even the general fee is Sh30,000 which is expensive for government-sponsored students please fight for our rights since many students are forced to defer studies”, wrote a student.

The University which is owned by the family of the former President Daniel Moi is privately owned and sits on a 600-acre (240 ha) farm 20 kilometres from Nakuru Ciyty, along the Nakuru–Eldama Ravine.

Asked if they’ve contacted the management to protest the issue, the student replied, ‘Our Vice Chancellor Gideon Moi is reluctant to respond to the issue’.

A retake in a public university costs less than Sh10,000, but with the bankruptcy and corruption at Higher Education Loans Board, many students drop out. With the death of the Daniel Moi, many of his business ventures have been sold off.

Kenya's education sector has become competitive to the tertiary institutions, with some like KEMU failing to attract students.

Is Kabarak hiking fees so as to squeeze the few students learning there?

It remains to be seen if it will survive the next 10 years.
