Story · Malindi woman dumps infant in a snake infested tank

An unknown woman dumped her newborn baby in a 15-feet septic tank after giving birth in Mkaomoto area of Malindi sub-county.

A samaritan who heard the infant crying, called other residents who used a ladder to get down into the septic to rescue the baby.

The innocent baby boy was placed in an open box without clothes and was still crying when the rescuers went in.

Also found in the tank were two snakes that surrounded the box in which the baby was placed but luckily he was not harmed. Residents who surrounded the scene to witness the rescue of the baby blamed and cursed the woman who is still not known but it is believed that she dumped him soon after birth. The man who rescued the baby wrapped him in a leso then handed him over to a group of women who were waiting to clean him and take him to the hospital.

Upon assessment at the Malindi sub-county hospital, the medical personnel after an assessment found the infant in good condition. Malindi OCS Stephen Mwachia also supported the infant as he bought diapers, milk and clothes. Held Esly, an activist from Malindi also condemned the act and termed it inhuman and she appealed with security agencies investigate the matter and bring the perpetrator to book.
