Story · Kabarak University students decry new discriminative policies and lack of political freedom in the institution

Hello Cyprian, I know you can do this best but first please hide my identity.

I am a student at Kabarak University. The university has come up with some policies that are not favourable to poor students and I would like you to highlight this matter.

One is that if you delay to pay your school fees, Ksh. 1,000 is added on top of the initial amount. It's parents who pay school fees and they don't delay willingly, they are forced to do so by circumstances.

Second is that you can't do exams before clearing school fees and if you go to the Vice Chancellor he tells you Kabarak University is not for poor students.

If that is the case, then why does the government send poor students to Kabarak University and why is it a Christian institution where church is mandatory on Wednesday yet they don't want to accommodate the poor?

If you don't report to the finance office on the third day after opening, you are forced to pay a fine of Ksh. 10,000.

Where on earth can a human being think of ten thousand as a fine on poor students who maybe we're still looking for transport or accomodation?

We kindly want this to reach Gideon. The university has no space for dialogue and even during elections the management doesn't accomodate competition. In fact, some months ago they expelled over 30 students who participated in election and complained about the results.

Please help us. Attached is a memo signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor.
