Story · Illegal Fines by Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association in Rift Valley

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA)secretary general, David Ngugi

Hi Cyprian.

Thank you for your good work.

I am a [withheld] in Rift Valley.

I kindly wish to report a worrying trend that has been ongoing concerning steep fines meted on games and coach teachers in some Rift Valley Counties.

Teachers who, for any reason delay in submitting student files for verification are fined 2000/=. Any mistake noted thereafter attracts a fine of 1000/=. The sad thing is the coach is supposed to shoulder this, despite the fact that their per diem is not even sufficient for such. The coach will have to dig into his pocket and top up the fine.

Despite the blatant unfairness, other questions beckon: These funds are not audited. Where is the transparency? There is no legal framework on payment of fines. Isn't this corruption? Why charge such steep fines? A fine of 200 or 300 is reasonable. Who are we fattening? I had shared this with the Education Ministry, DCI, TSC Twitter handles but no response so far. Please come to the aid of these hapless teachers. Thank you.
