DCI Nabs Suspect in Ksh12 Million Land Fraud

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a man accused of swindling a woman out of Ksh12 million in a fake land deal.

The 44-year-old suspect allegedly posed as the owner of a prime parcel of land in Garissa municipality and convinced the victim to pay for it in installments over several months.

According to the DCI, the woman made payments between June 29 and November 21, 2023. She believed she was buying legally owned land.

But trouble began when she tried to begin the land transfer process. Records from the Garissa Lands Registry told a different story—the land already had an owner, and it had never been sold.

The title deed on file clearly showed the rightful owner, a person who had been allocated the land by the government years earlier. This contradicted the suspect’s claims and exposed the fraud.

Detectives then verified the documents provided by the suspect and found them to be fake. With this evidence in hand, the Kilimani DCI officers launched a manhunt.

A Trail of Lies, Fake Titles, and Bold Moves

The suspect went into hiding shortly after the fraud came to light. But his freedom didn’t last long. Officers tracked him down to Eastleigh, Nairobi, where he was finally arrested and taken into custody at Kilimani Police Station.

This case is just one example of a growing wave of land fraud in Kenya. On April 3, DCI arrested eight more suspects—including two Ministry of Lands employees.

That group was caught with dozens of fake title deeds, 287 assorted rubber stamps, blank grant titles, allotment letters, green cards, passport-sized photos of various individuals, and forged transfer documents.

Investigators believe this criminal network has been running for some time, targeting unsuspecting Kenyans eager to own property.

The ease with which documents are forged has raised serious concerns about the safety of land transactions.

Following the arrest in the Ksh12 million land fraud case, the DCI and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) issued a joint warning to the public.

“It is imperative to thoroughly verify land ownership and ensure the authenticity of all relevant documents to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes,” read part of their statement.

Kenyans are now being urged to deal only with licensed land professionals, conduct official land searches, and confirm land details at the respective county registries before making any payments.

Wrapping Up …

The Ksh12 million land fraud case is a stark reminder that land buying in Kenya can be risky if due diligence is ignored.

While the suspect is now in police custody awaiting court charges, his arrest has reignited calls for deeper reforms in land management and record-keeping.

Until then, vigilance remains the public’s best defense against conmen who continue to exploit loopholes in the system.
