Female Student Narrates How She Was Sexually, Physically Harassed & Publicly Humiliated By Daystar University Security Guards
Newsroom Updated 3 min read
Good morning Cyprian.
I would first like to request to remain anonymous. And aslo for the names mentioned to remain anonymous. I am a student at Daystar University. Let me send you a a copy of the email I sent to report the harassment I recieved yesterday at Daystar University.
Dear DUSA Goverment,
I [NAME WITHHELD], student number (WITHHELD) would like to report the harassment I experienced today (11/02/2019) afternoon, here at Daystar University Valley Road Campus.
I had arrived at the front gate a few minutes past 13:00hrs in order to prepare for my class which is scheduled at 14:10hrs. Before I could show my student identification at the gate, the lady on duty told me that their new dress-code does not allow female students to wear off-shoulder as well as cold shoulder tops. I explained to her that just last week Thursday, I was allowed in school with the same top and there was no issues raised. I also tried to explain to her that one does not just wake up and pass a law or policy for there are procedures involved, especially when there is a mass number of people involved.
As I was walking through the gate to write a statement, a male guard standing on my opposite end, suddenly places his hands on my chest area and begins to push me. I try to tell him that under no circumstances is he allowed to place his hands on me.
I explain to him that his actions do not only classify as sexual harassment, but also a violation to my rights as a human as well as a student. However, he did not stop, instead, he began to use the gate to push me back. I raised my voice and told him that he was actually hurting me physically. The crowd of students that had gathered also tried to tell him his actions are not of conduct. However, he continued to harass me.
A lady, who was later identified as [NAME WITHHELD] by the crowd, instructed the male guard to continue hurting me, and even joined him in physically assulting me. She told me to lower my voice and I tried to explain to her that the reason I have raised my voice, is because I am being physically assulted. At no point did she care to hear both sides of the situation. I therefore moved back and requested if they could call the head of security to calm and address the problems at hand. Only to recieve insuts from both the male and female guard. Their insults were later recorded.
A group of students brought the head of security to address the issue. An hour after, I was adviced by the head of security to write a statement.
I have heard of many cases of harassment from my peers, and today I too am a victim. This behaviour should have been addressesd the very moment students began to raise the issue.
I await for your response as well as a way forward.
Regards.
