Story · Extortion In Kirinyaga Schools

Prof. George Magoha, Education Cabinet Secretary

Holiday tuition was banned by the then Minister of Education Mutula Kilonzo in 2012 during the launch of Education for All (EFA). Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, while he was in the education docket in 2017, reiterated this ban. However, it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Parents continue to be extorted through this holiday tuitions schemes across the country.

If course, what Kenya needs is a reform of 8-4-4 and not a complete overhaul through the slave-making competency based curriculum.

The 8-4-4 systems just needed some minor and good adjustments.

Here below, the cases of extortion in Kirinyaga.

Hi Nyakundi,

Kindly expose this issue on behalf of so many parents who are suffering because of the tuitions taking place in Kirinyaga county.

Its very sad that almost in all schools in Kirinyaga pupils and students rarely go for holidays.

On Saturdays they all go to school starting from grade 1; they are forced to go for tuition.

In kirinyaga primary schools don't go for mid-terms. And those that go, they only break for a weekend.

This should be investigated because our pupils are suffering.

Education officers should investigate this.
