Story · Ethiopian rustlers kill four in Turkana

Ethiopian rustlers on Thursday shot and killed four herders at Nang’usil Ngatuny in Turkana .

The region's Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi said that cattle rustlers from Ethiopia killed four herders and took away with 350 livestock from the village.

Ndanyi said that the rustlers also injured one National Police Reservist who was rushed to hospital for treatment and is now in a stable condition. National Police Reservists had engaged rustlers in a fierce battle that saw four herders lose their lives. Police say cattle rustlers from Ethiopia comprise of the Toposa and Nyangatom ethnic groups.

Ndanyi said the terrains in the region pose serious challenges to the security team that was responding to such incidents but with the help of National Police Reservists and Police, they have intensified patrols and beefed up security.

The police commander urged pastoralists in the region to avoid herding into the interior corridors along the border with Ethiopia where possible attacks are eminent.

“Now that we have pastures in the region, our people should avoid herding in dangerous corridors along the border of Kenya and Ethiopia for their own safety,” he said.

Just four days ago, Ethiopian cattle rustlers shot and killed a woman near River Natodomeri in Turkana County.

Turkana County said cattle rustlers were about to attack Turkana herders at Lokakweny Kraal in Kibish Sub-County but were repulsed by reservists and police officers from Lokamarinyang Police Post.
