Divided NSSF Trustees Snub Date With House Team As Turf War Rages

A divided National Social Security Fund (NSSF) leadership team yesterday snubbed a parliamentary committee that organized a meeting to address the vicious boardroom wars that have delayed the hiring of a managing trustee.

The board was expected to appear before the Public Investment Committee but only two out of 13 members turned up for the meeting. Committee chairman Abdulswamad Nassir sent away NSSF chairman Julius Karangi and Joseph Lekuton, saying the board was not properly constituted. Managing Trustee Anthony Omerikwa accompanied the two board members. “This meeting cannot proceed as the board is not properly constituted. We need all board members,” Mr Nassir said. According to the confused Karangi before the committee, only two board members verbally asked to be excluded from the meeting. One of the members is said to be abroad while the other did not state the nature of commitment.

The NSSF board is composed of Gen (Rtd) Karangi as the chairperson, Labour PS Peter Tum, Ms Jacqueline Mugo, who represents the Federation of Kenya Employers, Francis Atwoli, representing workers, Prof Dulacho Barako, Ms Damaris Muhika of Cotu, Joseph Lekuton, Prof Marion Mutugi and Mark Obuya.
