DEVELOPING: Twitter Goes Down Just Hours Before US President Donald Trump Hosts Controversial Social Media Summit At White House

Twitter users worldwide were unable to access the social-networking site Thursday, with an apparent outage that affected both mobile and web platforms.

On the web, users saw an error message that said, “Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing —we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.” An error message in the Twitter app said, “Tweets aren’t loading right now.”

In a statement, a Twitter rep said, “We are currently investigating issues people are having accessing Twitter.”

According to website DownDetector.com, Twitter began experiencing issues around 9:46 p.m. EAT on Thursday.

The highest concentration of user-reported technical problems were from Western Europe and the U.S.

The Twitter outage comes on the heels of a string of tweets by US President Donald Trump where he announced that right-wing social media personalities and conservative policy makers would converge at the White House on Thursday for a “social media summit” that won't include representatives from some of the world's largest platforms — Twitter, Google or Facebook.

According to the White House, the meeting chaired by Trump will bring together digital leaders for a robust conversation on the opportunities and challenges of today's online environment. With the president having complained about bias against conservatives online and even his own social media accounts.

Just recently, a technical glitch prevented Instagram users worldwide — as well as Facebook and WhatsApp users — from sharing or accessing photos and videos for much of the day. That was less than a month after Instagram had an outage that lasted more than two hours, following two other major outages in June.
