In a daring breakthrough, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have exposed a well-organized group of hackers who stole over Ksh3.2 million from unsuspecting victims.
The five suspects, described by police as “savvy fraudsters,” were arrested following intense investigations that started with a simple street crime in Nairobi.
What began as a phone theft on a busy city road spiraled into the uncovering of a sophisticated cybercrime operation targeting bank accounts. The DCI has promised that more arrests are expected as investigations continue.
DCI Expose How Hackers Began Operation After Victim’s Phone Theft
The chain of events started on Race Course Road when a motorist got stuck in traffic. Suddenly, two strangers approached his car, knocked on the window, and pretended his vehicle had been involved in a minor accident.
When the driver rolled down his window to check for damage, one of the strangers snatched his phone and disappeared into the crowd.
At first, the victim thought it was a random theft. But soon, his worst fears were confirmed. Large sums of money began disappearing from his bank accounts within hours of the incident.
According to the DCI, the victim lost Ksh1,892,625 from his first account. Another Ksh1,311,615 vanished from his second account. The money had been swiftly transferred to multiple accounts, making it harder to trace.
Detectives from the Starehe Sub-County launched a full-scale investigation. The trail led them to a suspect who admitted to playing a key role in the scheme. The man confessed he had been hired to open 11 bank accounts, receiving Ksh1,000 per account. These accounts were used to move stolen money without raising suspicion.
The first suspect’s arrest opened the floodgates. He provided leads that allowed the DCI to track down his accomplices. Police found the suspects traveling in a Toyota Voxy, carrying multiple SIM cards, a SIM card registration device, fake US dollars, and several ATM cards.

The suspects were arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts. The first three appeared in court on April 28, 2025, where police were given 21 days to complete investigations.
The remaining suspects were arraigned on May 5, 2025, with police granted 10 more days to expand the probe and capture more people involved.
The DCI announced that the investigation is far from over. Detectives believe the syndicate may be part of a larger criminal network targeting bank customers across the country.

The DCI urged the public to be cautious when using their phones in public places, especially in traffic. They advised bank customers to activate extra security features such as two-factor authentication, biometric locks, and instant alerts for transactions.
Financial analysts also called on banks to strengthen their digital defenses. “This incident shows that criminals are no longer relying solely on phishing emails or fake websites. They are using real-world tactics like phone theft to gain access,” a cybersecurity expert told reporters.
As detectives continue to unravel the network, Kenyans are watching closely to see if more insiders or high-level collaborators will be exposed. The DCI assured the public that they are committed to dismantling the entire syndicate and recovering stolen funds.
