Dr.S.K Macharia (Right) and Wife Purity Gathoni; Royal Media Services Chairman and Vice Chair Person
Royal Media Services (RMS) , the media company owned by Dr. S.K. Macharia is a family entity that is run like a Roman hoe-house.
The wife, Purity Gathoni Macharia amekalia Mzee chapo.
Most decisions to fire and hire are made inside the bedroom, not boardroom.
That kind of arrangement can have detrimental effects in the proper running of any company.
Kenya's economy has been fucked up by the Jubilee regime and most companies are feeling the pain.
It is often said that over 3 million Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) have closed shop since 2013 when UhuRuto took over power.
The clueless gang have chocked almost all sections of this economy, including the media.
As advertising revenues dwindle owing to Jubilee crony capitalism, poor public financial management and outright myopia, media houses have been left with no choice but to retrench employees.
Nation Media house is said to be planning to lay-off 30 percent of their staff due to harsh economic conditions.
In late 2016, RMS staff woke up to chilling news of a restructuring that saw over 100 employees leave, 30 of them in radio.
A memo from the management that time said, the difficult business environment in the broadcast industry had cut revenues and left it with no option but to rationalise its departments.
RMS laid off some important staff during the course of some few weeks after the memo in 2016.
RMS, owns Kenya’s leading TV station Citizen and is the country’s largest broadcast house with over 15 radio stations.
Below is an advice for Purity Gathoni Macharia and Samwel Kamau Macharia, from RMS staff, incase they have to do restructuring the way Nation Media Group (NMG) is planning to:
Hi Nyakundi,
Leaders must be able to make sound decision; firing 350 people earning 39K is not a long term solution to what is ailing RMS.
We must now ask people to take pay cut and henceforth come up with policies to regulate salaries in RMS.
I can assure you if this drastic measure is not taken we will be back discussing the same issues in the boardroom.
Anyone can take this to the nearest SACCO.
