On May 28, 2020, Nairobi residents breathed a sigh of relief as the long-awaited Kasarani-Mwiki road repair works finally commenced.
The contractor started work last week, just days after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) announced that the repair works would begin after the tender was awarded.
According to Kura, the main project involves rehabilitating approximately 3.6km of roads in Kasarani-Mwiki Road and Sunnyside Court Estate Roads, which will include rehabilitation to bitumen standards and construction of drainage structures.
The works will also include the construction of 7.0m carriageways with 1.0m wide shoulders, open drains on either side of the road, road furniture, utility relocation, safety provisions, and protection works.
Once the construction is completed, the contractor will maintain the road for a year.
Residents of Kasarani and Mwiki areas had previously protested over the poor state of the road, with violent demonstrations taking place in January, resulting in one person's death and several injuries.
