On May 7, 2020, mobile phone service provider Safaricom reported an outage of its M-Pesa services on the MySafaricom App, affecting other services such as KCB M-Pesa and Mshwari operated jointly by Safaricom and KCB Group and NCBA bank respectively.
The downtime occurred at a time when the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) had allowed the minimum transaction limit on M-Pesa to increase from KSh 70,000 to KSh 150,000, with the daily limit of amounts that can be transacted through this channel also increasing to KSh 300,000.
The company reassured its clients that it was working to restore the service, providing an alternative for customers to access M-Pesa services through the SIM Toolkit on their phone's menu.
As an alternative, customers can continue to access M-Pesa services through the SIM Toolkit on the phone’s menu, as stated by Safaricom.
