On March 14, 2020, Homa Bay County Secretary Isaiah Ogwe and outgoing Homa Bay St Paul’s Catholic Church Priest Fr Boniface Alando interacted with Homa Bay Boda boda and Spouses CBO members at the church during a fundraiser.
Speaking at the fundraiser, Ogwe emphasized the importance of self-reliance in reducing unemployment in the county. He encouraged the youth and women to form savings groups, which would enable them to access funds to start businesses.
“One of my agenda is youth and women empowerment. Let us collaborate to champion this agenda,” said Ogwe.
He also cautioned elected leaders against embezzling funds collected for the savings groups, urging them to demonstrate high levels of accountability.
Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo echoed Ogwe's sentiments, stating that empowering the youth and women would alleviate societal problems in the county. She appealed to the community to put concerted efforts into sensitizing them on job creation.
Fr Alando, who initiated the CBO, aimed to enable 36 Boda boda riders acquire a motorbike each and provide their wives with money to start businesses.
He appealed to First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Deputy President’s wife Rachel Ruto, and ODM leader’s wife Ida Odinga to intervene in supporting the youth and women.
