Published on November 14, 2019, two officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have each been fined Ksh.10,000 after they were found guilty of contempt of court.

Dr. Ouma Oluga, KMPDU Secretary General, and Dr. Davji Atella, South Rift branch Secretary, were found guilty of failing to call off the Laikipia County doctors strike despite a court order.

According to the court, Judge Nzioki Makau had directed the union officials to call off the strike and resume duty, but they failed to comply.

Dr. Oluga defended himself in court, stating that he had no powers to call off the strike without consent from the union members.

He also argued that he is a law-abiding citizen and a practicing physician, and that a prison sentence would negatively impact his 10-month-old baby boy.
