"Brightly-colored walls are the in-thing, but you don't have to repaint to brighten up your space," Mwanje says. "Kitenge is a very accessible and versatile fabric that is also inexpensive."
One of the best things about kitenge is its versatility. It can be used to create a variety of decorative items, from pillowcases and table runners to duvets and curtains.
"If you want to go big and bold, you can go for a kitenge duvet cover with a set of matching pillowcases," Mwanje advises. "But if you're the kind that prefers small doses of color, a bed runner or throws will do the job just fine."
Kitenge is not just limited to decorative items, however. It can also be used to create functional pieces, such as mirrors, clocks, and decorative boxes.
"You could just have a fabric that is artsy stretched and framed to create an art piece that you could hang on the wall to add some drama to your abode without having to spend so much money," notes Joseph Onyango, the proprietor of African Eye Crafts.
Party Lounges Ltd, a company that hires out bespoke furniture pieces to event planners, also uses kitenge to upholster their seats.
"The style was inspired by the sentimental value and feeling it represents," explains Patricia Mwalimu, co-owner of the company.
