Beatrice Elachi, the embattled Nairobi County speaker, made a dramatic return to office after a year-long absence, sparking controversy over the role of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko in her comeback.

Published on October 10, 2019, reports indicate that a series of meetings between Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Jubilee ward representatives led to the dramatic return of Elachi to City Hall.

According to sources, the discussions, which received the support of Governor Sonko, were secretly shared with only a few Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

On October 4, 2019, Governor Sonko wrote a letter to Elachi and Jubilee Secretary-General Raphael Tuju, suggesting the replacement of former Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo with Maringo Hamza MCA Mark Ndung'u, who spearheaded planning for Elachi's return.

Elachi, however, denied Sonko's involvement in her return, claiming that the constant insults she received from Guyo while out of office prompted her return to the office.

Elachi's return was coupled with the ejection of Abdi Guyo, who had planned her impeachment in 2018.
