On September 5, 2019, a dramatic robbery occurred at Standard Chartered Bank's Nairobi West branch, where three armed men dressed in Administration Police uniforms stole Sh72 million from a money transport van.

The thieves, who seemed to have prior knowledge of the cash movement, executed the robbery without firing a single bullet. They posed as police officers and were armed with rifles.

According to police, the robbers withdrew part of the cash from an ATM in Nairobi West, while the rest was left in a bag with a KDF soldier, Eunice Wangari, who was left to guard it at Kahawa Barracks.

Wangari, a KDF soldier, directed the police to pick the money bag from her sister, AP officer Florence Wanjiru, who was guarding Equity Bank. However, Wanjiru informed the police that her boyfriend had escaped with the money.

Police later arrested Wangari, along with AP constable Caroline Njeri and police constable Simon Karuku, who were taken to Lang'ata police station pending investigations.

On September 16, 2019, police recovered Sh2.3 million more of the stolen cash from a suspect's grandmother's house in Machakos. The suspect, who is a brother to another suspect arrested earlier, took police to his grandmother's house where the money was recovered.

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said they are looking for more suspects and hope to recover more cash from them.
