September 19, 2019, marked a day of intense online backlash against Storymoja, a Kenyan publishing company, over their endorsement of a South African novel 'Blood Ties' as suitable for teenage readers.

The controversy began when a section of the book's text was shared online, sparking outrage over its depiction of violent robbery and use of obscene language.

Storymoja's Managing Editor, Monity Odera, released a statement defending the company's decision to list the book in their catalogue for high school readers and above.

"While this particular title was not submitted to or approved by KICD, most of our books have been validated and recommended across various age groups," Odera said.

However, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) warned that not all books in the market are approved, and that teachers and parents should rely on the Orange book to buy the right books.

Storymoja maintained that they recommended 'Blood Ties' because it tackles social ills such as substance, child and sexual abuse, bullying, peer pressure, and the effects on children.

The company also stated that the book guides readers on steps to take should they find themselves in a similar situation.

Text Book Centre, a Nairobi-based bookshop, has asked Storymoja to recall the book, citing their commitment to upholding high moral standards and raising responsible citizens.
