Published on September 19, 2019, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua failed to appear before a Senate oversight committee for questioning over the 2017-18 audit queries raised by the Auditor General's office.

The Senate County Public Accounts and Investment Committee had invited the governor to appear before it in Kitui, where the Senate was sitting.

However, Dr. Mutua skipped the meeting and instead sent a letter indicating that Machakos Senator Boniface Kabaka had mobilized goons to attack him in Kitui.

According to the letter, Mutua claimed to have intelligence information that youth were being mobilized by his opponents in the region to heckle him and paint him as corrupt.

But the Senator rubbished Mutua's allegations, saying the county chief was seeking a cheap excuse to avoid questioning.

Committee members accused the governor of disrespecting the Senate, terming his excuse as 'juvenile'.

The Committee has now summoned the county boss to appear before the panel on September 30, 2019, in Machakos.
