On September 17, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko took swift action against two nurses from Dandora Health Centre after a pregnant woman was forced to deliver outside the facility due to a lack of a Sh20 registration fee.

According to reports, the woman was denied access to the hospital, leaving her to give birth at the doors of the facility's main entrance by herself.

Women in the area protested outside the health centre in Embakasi North on Monday, prompting Governor Sonko to take action.

Nairobi County Health executive Mohamed Dagane stated that maternity services are free at all county facilities and no one is supposed to pay any charges.

"No one is supposed to be subjected to inhuman delivery experiences in or outside our health facilities," he said.

Investigations into the matter are underway, and Governor Sonko has promised to terminate contracts of any health practitioner who will be found to have disregarded their professional code of conduct while on duty.
