Published on September 18, 2019, a remarkable story emerged from Busia County where two couples had swapped partners in a bid to salvage their marriages.

The couples, Ms. Lilian Weta and Mr. Christopher Abwire, and Ms. Immaculate Wekesa and Mr. Kevin Barasa, had exchanged partners due to incessant quarrels that had destabilized their marriages.

Ms. Weta, a mother of three, and Ms. Wekesa, a mother of two, had taken the unusual step of swapping partners in a bid to save their marriages.

The couples signed a joint parental responsibility agreement before a tribunal led by County Commissioner Jacob Narengo, Busia County Director of Children's Services Esther Wasige, and Matayos Sub-county Children's Officer Luke Papa.

According to County Commissioner Jacob Narengo, the government is keen on ensuring that the children's rights are protected, and the agreement will be reviewed on a need basis.

Mr. Narengo warned the couple that they risk being charged in court if they breach the agreement, stating, 'Any of you who will be found abusing the rights of any of these children will be dealt with accordingly.'

The arrangement also directs that shelter and food will be provided by the mothers, while education will be provided by the fathers.

Both parents were also directed to cover medical expenses and clothing, with the children granted unlimited access to both parents who will be reporting to the children's department on a monthly basis.
