On September 18, 2019, the World Bank highlighted the importance of professionalising boards in State-owned enterprises, including Kenya Airways.

Kenya Airways chairman Michael Joseph has called for the professionalisation of the carrier's board, a move that is critical to its future commercial success.

As the majority owner, the government must issue clear guidance on how it will make major decisions for the carrier, ensuring that its board is not compromised by politically-connected individuals.

According to a World Bank toolkit on corporate governance, political appointees on boards are likely to pursue goals that may harm the financial health of the company.

Kenya Airways must avoid this fate and establish a clear policy or guideline for nominating and appointing qualified directors to its board.
