On September 18, 2019, the Geothermal Development Company (GDC) announced a major breakthrough in the Baringo-Silali geothermal project with the successful drilling of the Paka Well in Baringo County.
The Paka One well began emitting steam over the weekend, marking a significant milestone in the project.
According to GDC's managing director, Johnston Ole Nchoe, the project is expected to produce 300MW of power once completed, which will be critical in further lowering the cost of electricity in the country and driving the big four agenda.
"It has proved the viability of the Paka geothermal field," said Mr. Nchoe. "The success of the drilling of the well is exciting. Paka is no longer a prospect but a field."
The Baringo-Silali project covers three geothermal prospects: Silali, Paka, and Korosi. Drilling and development of the field will be done in three phases, with each well expected to produce 100 MW.
