On September 18, 2019, Geothermal Development Company (GDC) achieved a major breakthrough in the country's geothermal energy production by successfully drilling the first well pad at Paka hills in Baringo County.

According to GDC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Engineer Johnson Ole Nchoe, the well has been releasing steam for the last three days, a historic achievement that not only benefits the people of Baringo but the entire country.

Speaking on the development, Nchoe said, "The country now has a new geothermal field other than what is known traditionally in Olkaria and Menengai. Once discovered, geothermal energy will drive the Big 4 Agenda, is renewable, and a cheaper source of energy."

Apart from prospecting for green energy, the community has also benefited as GDC has provided water for livestock and to the people.

The Paka hills GDC prospect is among the 30 wells projected to generate 3000 Megawatts once all wells pads are completed.

Geothermal Development Company, which started its prospects in Paka, Korossi, and Silali, Tiaty Sub-county seven years ago, registered the presence of geothermal in Paka well following a steam that has been successfully generated.
