Published on September 18, 2019, Gor Mahia, the reigning Kenya Premier League champions, has abandoned Moi Stadium Kisumu as their homeground due to low payouts from attendance.
The club's chairman, Ambrose Rachier, revealed that Gor Mahia has been incurring heavy losses whenever they host matches at the Moi Stadium Kisumu, citing low gate collection returns.
According to Rachier, in their last KPL fixture at the Kisumu Stadium, the stadium was full, but the club received only Sh. 112,000, which is a far cry from the Sh. 511,000 worth of tickets sold.
The club spent Ksh. 600,000 in preparations and air travel to Kisumu, to honour the fixture, leaving them with a significant loss.
As a result, Gor Mahia fans have threatened to decamp to Kisumu All Stars, known among the locals as Otenga, after the club's chairman, Nicholas Ochieng', warned against bringing hooliganism to the stadium.
Ochieng' admitted that he was roughed up during the August 31 KPL double header at the Stadium by K'Galo stewards and Cartels.
Despite the change in venue, Gor Mahia is set to face Chemelil Sugar in a KPL encounter on Thursday, which was initially to be played at Moi Stadium, but has since been relocated to the Kericho Green Stadium.
