On September 18, 2019, the Congolese army announced the death of Sylvestre Mudacumura, a Rwandan Hutu rebel leader wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.
According to General Leon-Richard Kasonga, a DRC military spokesperson, Mudacumura was shot dead by the Congolese army in North Kivu province on Tuesday night.
Mudacumura was the commander of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a rebel group accused of committing atrocities, including participating in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Mudacumura in 2012 for nine counts of war crimes, including murder, rape, and torture.
