November 19th, 2017, marked the beginning of a new wave of violence in Nairobi, as a series of killings targeting people believed to be from the Luo community in Riverside – Ruaraka sparked a chain reaction of revenge attacks.
The attacks, which were allegedly carried out by members of the outlawed Mungiki gang, resulted in the deaths of at least five people, with many more injured and properties destroyed.
As the situation spiralled out of control, confrontations between the police and residents in the area intensified, with several vehicles torched in the process.
Despite the severity of the situation, the police remained silent, issuing no statement to address the violence.
