On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, a tense standoff unfolded at the Kisumu County Assembly as members of the assembly clashed with police over Speaker Onyango Oloo's attempt to access his office.

According to reports, Oloo's allies had been replaced by an Acting Speaker, Elisha Oraro, the previous day, following a motion to impeach Oloo due to fraud-related charges.

Anti-riot police were deployed to avert violence and dispersed the MCAs using teargas.

The impeachment plan, engineered by Kondele ward MCA Joachim Oketch, cited several grounds for Oloo's removal, including allegations of corruption in the construction of the Lake Basin Mall.

Oloo maintains that no court orders have barred him from accessing his office as the Speaker and that his attempted impeachment is not procedural.
