On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, Kisumu Speaker Onyango Oloo faced a tense standoff with anti-riot police as he attempted to enter the County Assembly.
His ally, Roy Samo (MCA Kajulu ward), was also caught in the melee as the officers lobbed teargas canisters.
Passersby were forced to scamper for safety as police engaged in running battles with lawmakers outside the Assembly precinct.
The confrontation came a day after Kisumu County MCAs drafted a motion to impeach Oloo, who is facing fraud-related charges.
The MCAs sought to replace Oloo with Kisumu North MCA Elisha Oraro as acting Speaker.
The impeachment plan was allegedly engineered by Kondele ward MCA Joachim Oketch, who tabled a notice of motion to permanently remove Oloo as Speaker.
