Amsterdam police detained eight Lille fans on September 18, 2019, after a Champions League match against Ajax turned violent.

According to the Amsterdam police, the eight fans were suspected of violence at Strandvliet metro station and were placed in formal detention.

The violence erupted hours before the match at the Johan Cruyff Arena, where Ajax won 3-0 to top Group H.

Supporters were forced to halt rail traffic and evacuate two stations for a short while, causing disruptions to the match day.

Lille's president, Gerard Lopez, condemned the violence and stated that the club was in touch with the Dutch police.

Approximately 3,000 Lille fans traveled from Lille to Amsterdam to watch their team's first Champions League campaign in seven years.
