On September 18, 2019, a UN commission presented its final report to the international human rights council in Geneva, concluding that President Pierre Nkurunziza is personally accountable for serious violations in Burundi.
The report, which investigated abuses in the country, found that opposition members, their families, and individuals who refused to cooperate with the ruling party ahead of the 2020 elections were killed, abducted, or tortured.
Agents of the national intelligence service, the police, and the ruling party's youth wing were identified as the main perpetrators of crimes against humanity.
However, a representative of the Burundian government, Tabu Renovat, dismissed the findings as politically motivated.
