Published on September 18, 2019, a study by Dr. Pranav Pancholi, a cosmetic dermatologist at Avane cosmetic clinic in Nairobi, shed light on the condition of hirsutism in women.
According to Dr. Pancholi, hirsutism is medically termed as the growth of excessive hair in women, often on the face, chest, and back. He explains that the condition can be caused by hormonal imbalance or genetics, and may also be a pointer to an underlying disease called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
Dr. Kireki Omanwa, an obstetrician and gynecologist, adds that PCOS presents with a biochemistry of elevated male hormones, which then provokes male-pattern hair growth. He notes that hirsutism could also be attributed to genetics.
While shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams may provide temporary relief, Dr. Pancholi emphasizes that laser hair removal is the only permanent solution against the growth of unwanted hair.
Women with hirsutism often seek hair removal treatment due to low self-esteem and societal pressure. As Dr. Pancholi notes, 'The society has standards of what is feminine, and any woman who does not fit the bill is chastised for it.'
However, psychologist Catherine Mbau believes that accepting oneself is key to living life again, quirks notwithstanding. She emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and encourages individuals to look at themselves in the mirror and speak words of affirmation.
