Published on September 18, 2019, a survey by InterNations ranked Kenya among the top 10 most dangerous countries to live in for expatriates.

The Expat Insider 2019 report, published by Forbes, was based on a survey of 20,259 expats representing 182 nationalities and living in 187 countries or territories.

Respondents were asked to score 48 different factors related to living abroad, which were grouped into five main pillars: quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, family life, and personal finance.

Kenya's ranking as the 7th worst place to live was largely due to safety concerns, with many respondents feeling that Kenyan streets are unsafe and that they must be vigilant.

One Danish expat noted that they avoid walking around Kenyan streets, preferring to 'drive or be driven everywhere.' A Croatian expat also reported that expats in Kenya are often targeted by locals who believe foreigners are wealthy, and that police officers may demand bribes on non-existent charges.

Other expats cited poor road conditions, terrible traffic, and a dirty city as additional concerns.

The survey ranked Brazil as the most dangerous country, followed by South Africa, Nigeria, Argentina, and India.
