Published on September 17, 2019, AFC Leopards head coach Andre Casa Mbungo has urged his strikers to improve their goal-scoring prowess in order to gain momentum in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season.
Mbungo emphasized the importance of every department performing at its best, with a particular focus on the striking force after two matches without a goal. The team lost 1-0 to Kakamega Homeboyz in the season opener and drew 0-0 against Kariobangi Sharks on Sunday, despite reinforcing the attack during the preseason.
"In football, you need to be on top of things in every department, and that's why we do our best in training collectively. We have not been able to find the back of the net so far, and that defines our major problem. We must get it right up-front," said Mbungo.
The coach has a talented attacking lineup at his disposal, featuring Ismaila Diarra, John Mark Makwatta, Whyvonne Isuza, and Paul Were. However, they have struggled to find the back of the net in over 120 minutes of play.
Despite the challenges, Mbungo is pleased with the team's improvement in display and creation of chances match after match.
There has been speculation surrounding the team's captaincy, with some claiming that Mbungo has promoted Soter Kayumba to the role at the expense of creative midfielder Isuza. However, Mbungo has refuted these claims, stating that Kayumba has been handed the armband in the absence of injured Robinson Kamura, and that Isuza remains the team's captain.
Leopards will face Wazito FC at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega this Saturday in the third round of KPL matches.
