On September 16, 2019, Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo maintained that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) conducted a nomination exercise for the Kibra by-election without interference.

Speaking at a function in Wagai, the MP accused opponents of spreading propaganda, claiming that ODM's nomination process was bungled.

He further alleged that Amani National Congress (ANC) candidate Eliud Owalo had been sponsored by Deputy President William Ruto to undermine the Kibra by-election.

The MP stated that their rivals were planning to divide ODM voters but insisted that this plan would not succeed.

ODM's nomination exercise for the Kibra by-election was held on September 16, 2019, with 10 candidates vying for the party's ticket.

Okoth, also known as Imran, emerged as the party's flag bearer after securing 4,382 votes against Peter Ochieng' Orero's 1,218 and John Milla Otieno's 906.
