As the seventh-month upgrade period nears its end, Kisumu Port is ready to kickstart operations, marking a significant improvement in maritime activities at Lake Victoria.
According to reports, the port's upgrade, which cost approximately Kshs 700 million, has seen the concreting of the port yard, construction of the quayside, repairs of the linkspan, repairs of the dry dock, rehabilitation of all buildings, and repairing of all link roads to the port.
Additional facilities have been installed, including forklift trucks, mobile cranes, and tractor-trailers, further enhancing the port's capabilities.
With a cargo-carrying capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes, Kisumu Port is poised to boost regional trade within the East African Community by linking the towns of Kisumu, Mwanza, and Bukoba, thereby creating employment opportunities.
As the port prepares to handle both containerized and conventional cargo, it is expected to play a vital role in the region's economic growth.
